The Types of Credit Cards Available

There are quite a few different types of credit cards; this should really come as no surprise given that there are so many people with so many different needs. Because you do have so many choices it is a good idea to learn the differences between them so that you can choose the right card to meet your needs. This will help to keep you from getting into trouble with your credit cards.

The most common type of credit card is the standard credit card; this is the one that most people have. It provides you with revolving debt up to whatever your credit limit is. That means that as you use your card the amount that you put on it is reduces from your credit limit. However when you pay your bill you can then reduce the amount that you have paid from the amount owing and this amount can then be used to make additional purchases with the card.

Another type of credit card that is quite common is a limited purpose card. This is similar to a standard card but it can only be used at certain places or for certain things. Store credit cards are the most common example of this since you can only use them at the store that issued the card.

A rewards card is another type that is quite common these days. This works just like a regular credit card except that you get credit towards a reward of some sort every time that you use it. An air miles card is the most common of these but you can get them offering all kinds of different rewards.

A secured credit card works in a similar way to a standard credit card except that you need to deposit money as security in order to be able to get the card. These are usually intended for people who have bad credit and need a way to rebuild it. The card provides you with credit and your payment history will be reported to the credit bureaus. This can be a great way to get your credit back in order.

A prepaid credit card is one in which you load money onto the card and then that amount is deducted from the card as you use it. Strictly speaking this is not a credit card since you are not borrowing money but it can be used in places where a credit card is required so it is a good option for people who either can't get or don't want a credit card.

A lot of people use the term charge card interchangeably with credit cards but these are actually a different thing. The big difference is that a charge card has to be paid in full each month. These used to be fairly common but they really aren't that common any more.
